The paper reviews theoretical bases of the competition movement, as well as experience in organizing and conducting the Open Economics Competition of the ISEDT RAS Research-Educational Centre (in Vologda). Modern education is aimed at developing students’ intellectual and creative abilities. In this regard, there is an acute issue of organizing and conducting events for their timely identification. Such events include academic competitions in school subjects. They are the most important factor in searching for talented young people and forming the intellectual potential of the future country’s elite. Academic competitions do not only check students’ academic achievements; it is also an intellectual, heuristic, intelligent search competition in creative application of knowledge, skills, abilities and competences for solving non-standard and complex tasks. Competitions, particularly in school subjects are an effective tool forming motivation for learning, stimulating students’ cognitive activity, developing their creative abilities, stimulating the deepening and expansion of students’ knowledge of the subject. The relevance and significance of this study is attributed to the need for the development of competition movement in economics, involvement of talented students in active learning, research and creative activity for forming an algorithm of dealing with the students in terms of their participation in a competition. The article reviews the concepts of “competition movement”, “academic competition”, as well as historical background of academic competitions. The author gives the classification of competitions by type and form, describes the modern system of academic competitions in the Russian Federation, gives the criteria for their inclusion in the List of Academic Competitions and the possible university admissions privileges for their participants. The author also analyzes qualitative and quantitative indicators of Open Economics Competition of the ISEDT RAS Research-Educational Centre held by the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2015–2016. Based on the analysis, the author presents a list of activities aimed at improving the level of the competition in 2016–2017
