The process of formation and development of high-tech production in the Russian economy has acquired the status of uncontested necessity. In the Strategy for scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation the transition to innovative economy is considered as an absolute imperative for long-term development of Russia. Within the framework of this strategy current priorities for scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation were identified, including nanotechnology industries, energy preservation, and transition to advanced digital and intelligent production technologies. Among the major scientific and technological trends developing the data of priority orientations it should be noted the widespread penetration of information technologies in the development of economic activities, the evolution of the Internet, involving further development of the concept of distributed networks and integration into the infrastructure of new classes of objects of the Internet of things, the essence of which lies in the informatization of various items and their integration into a single network of networks. Such systems and networks have a transformative effect on all sectors of the modern economy and business, and transfer industrial automation on the newest fourth level of industrialization. The purpose of this article is to summarize theoretical and methodological foundations and the experience of innovative development of economy in the conditions of the fourth industrial revolution based on the development of the Internet of things. The article explains the importance of the transition to the use of high-tech industries on the basis of the concept of the Internet of things. The article develops the analysis of existing domestic and foreign approaches to the assessment of the concept of the Internet of things. The author describes the structure of the market of the Internet of things in Russia and makes a conclusion that national economic policy aimed at improving the competitiveness of Russian companies, volume growth of Russian products in the domestic and external markets, their corporate incomes and, ultimately, an increase in GDP, can rely on the initiatives of development of the Internet of things as the basis of the new economy
