The paper determines the importance of academic olympiads in economics for school students in the modern educational process. To achieve this purpose the author considers the concept of “Olympiad movement”, “Olympics”, defines the role of academic olympiads in the process education. The study examines historical stages of development of the olympiad movement in Russia and the world, as well as a significant contribution to the formation and development of the olympiad movement of such scientists and educators as P.S. Aleksandrov, B.N. Delone, V.F. Kagan, L.N. Kolmogorov, A.L. Markushevich, I.S. Petrakov, V.I. Smirnov, S.L. Sobolev, and others. In the modern stage of development of the olympiad movement in economics in Russia, the author describes the system of olympiads in economics. This system consists of the All-Russian Olympiad, olympiads included into the List of Olympiads for schoolchildren and organized under the auspices of the Russian Council of School Olympiads, and olympiads organized by various universities, organizations and scientific institutions. The author describes specifics of organization and holding olympiads of all levels, provides statistics on the number of participations of pupils in olympiads in recent years, the possibilities of receiving benefits to enroll in universities that can be given to winners and prize-winners of olympiads. The role of olympiads is defined by the author as a significant mechanism used by the state for the search, support and career counseling of gifted and talented children. A promising direction for further research on the topic could be the study of foreign experience of formation and development of the olympiad movement. The material presented in the article may be useful for teachers of educational institutions, heads of educational institutions, students of pedagogical programs at universities, employees and methodists of scientific-educational centers and organizations
