The debate about the appropriate use of IT in education is gradually losing its relevance. It is obvious that nowadays it is not only the most common tool, but also the usual form of interaction, including pedagogical. In conditions where the society is rapidly moving from information type to smart type (smart society), people with most flexible knowledge, creating more knowledge-intensive and technological products are more effective. That is why smart society cannot be imagined without smart education, i.e. without self-governed, motivated, flexible education based on enriched cognitive resources and technological learning methods. The article defines the concepts of “smart education”, “smart technology”. The study is based on the analysis of various foreign and domestic sources devoted to the issues of using smart technology in the educational process. Innovative smart technology is rapidly gaining popularity due to their availability and mobility. The use of smart technology contributes to the implementation of a personality-centered approach, the students’ awareness of the whole image of the discipline, helps to ensure self-learning, individualize learning, improve control , self-control and the effectiveness of the educational process. The practical significance of the research is that the analysis of foreign approaches to this issue and the findings can be used in the development of the concept of smart education in Russia
