The phenomenon of charity has existed since ancient times and largely characterizes any society and state, their economic, social, spiritual, and moral state, degree of maturity of the civil society. At the present stage of Russia’s socio-economic development characterized by lack of resources to solve important strategic tasks, assistance from business units is of particular relevance. In this regard, the article is aimed at studying charity work of economic entities in retrospect, taking into account its historical background and analysis of its current activity. The genesis of charity work development in Russia is presented with its distinctive features. Based on generalization of works of domestic and foreign experts, definitions of this category using institutional and functional approaches are systematized. The institutional features, goals and functions of charity work are defined. The results of global ranking of private charity work for 2010–2017 annually published by the British Charities Aid Foundation are analyzed. New Zealand, the USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland have consistently occupied leading positions in this ranking. In 2017, Russia ranked 12th, improving its position annually. The main reasons for the low level of charity work in our country includes its one-time nature and underdeveloped institutional environment. It has been established that only large economic entities can afford to engage in the development of population’s quality of life. Analysis of charity projects and programs of major economic entities in the Vologda Oblast has been performed. The problems arising during charity work development are revealed, the issues of motivation, relations between the donor and the recipient are covered, defining the key prerequisites for charity work development and priority areas of support in this sphere. The author uses general scientific research methods (logical and system approaches, structural and functional analysis, generalization), statistical (grouping, sampling, comparison and generalization), as well as graphical and tabular data visualization techniques. The informational research framework lies in the work of Russian and foreign scholars, practitioners and specialists in the field of charity work of economic entities, data from official websites of information and analytical agencies
