In 2020, the Vologda Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences celebrated the 30th anniversary of its foundation in the region. Before, there were no academic economic institutions. The Center was created in difficult years for the country, but, throughout the years, work was carried out within its walls in a wide range of scientific areas. Among them, research on the specifics of social and labor relations, labor market, and labor potential quality was of special importance. The article provides an overview of the scientific research areas, carried out at the Vologda Research Center of RAS, related to the problems of social and labor relations, employment issues, adaptation and behavior of the population on the labor market, and other sociological aspects of human development in the social and labor sphere. The overview also links the periods of the Russian labor market evolution and their characteristic features with the research conducted at the Center. The emphasis is placed on the scientific (new methods, methodological techniques and methods) and practical (dissertation defense, monograph preparation, modeling of labor processes for municipal districts of the region, etc.) effectiveness of labor potential study which has more than 20 years of history. The methodological tools, used by the Center’s employees for assessing the labor potential quality, are unique. It makes it possible to evaluate the employee from different points of view, to identify the slightest changes in work activity, working life, and behavior, taking into account new challenges of the labor market (institutional, economic, social, etc.)
